American Cyborg: Steel Warrior

MPAA Rating: R

Entertainment: +2

Content: -3 1/2

AMERICAN CYBORG blatantly exploits brutal violence to shock and unnerve. Oddly enough, this science fiction story revolves around an attempt to save a dying humanity after a nuclear war. Among the survivors, only Mary (Nichole Hansen) can reproduce. She has produced a fetus which is being secretly kept alive in a plastic cylinder. The pitiful townspeople are ruthlessly controlled by an evil government using half human, half machine robots called cyborgs. Mary is stalked by a sadistic killer cyborg played by John Ryan. However, she is befriended by a rugged adventurer named Austin (Joe Lara) who fights endless brutal, bloody battles to protect her. The mediocre acting and plot serve only as a framework for the violence.

The tension and fear generated by the film are unrelenting. Austin and the cyborg engage in ferocious battles, and the cyborg wipes out whole groups of people and property at close range with his huge automatic weapon. Sometimes spikes materialize on his fingers to stab victims. When he is stabbed in the chest and eye and impaled on a huge spike, he magically rejuvenates himself. A group of grotesque cannibals threaten to eat Mary, but Austin rescues her. Some sexually suggestive incidents involve prostitutes, and the usual crude and obscene language appears regularly. Only those inclined to subject themselves to torture at the movies will consider this exercise in brutality.
