Based on his book, directed by and starring Cyril Collard, SAVAGE NIGHTS seems to be autobiographical. Collard died of AIDS complications after this film was made. A young bisexual Frenchman named Jean (Collard) discovers he is HIV-positive. Nonetheless, he begins dating Laura (Romane Bohringer) who doesn't mind that Jean also likes boys. He tells her he has AIDS after they have sex. This French film with English subtitles is an interesting look at AIDS but not a look to be recommended.
SAVAGE NIGHTS contains numerous scenes of homosexual and heterosexual encounters. The characters exhibit repugnant behavior and lack respect for life. After Laura learns Jean has AIDS, she refuses to use protection. The infected Jean has liaisons with other men and prostitutes. He threatens a "skinhead" with his tainted blood from a knife cut. If this is truly autobiographical, was Cyril Collard trying to warn others like him of the wages of sin?
