Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Entertainment: +3

Content: -2 1/2

Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) is back for another adventure in NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT. In this sequel to the silly Police Squad series, Frank has married Jane (Priscilla Presley), a successful lawyer, and has retired from the Police Squad to spend time with Jane. As Frank stays home and cooks and cleans, Jane fights legal battles for single working mothers. This humorous role reversal is just one of the satirical jabs at modern life. Frank is recruited by Ed (George Kennedy) and Nordberg (O.J. Simpson) to expose the mad bomber Rocco's (Fred Ward) bomb attempt from his jail cell in Statesville. Frank goes undercover as a prisoner, putting up with all the stereotypical indecencies of prison life in order to uncover Rocco's plan. Comical deeds and misdeeds abound when Frank and Rocco escape. The final, frenetic scene takes the whole gang to the Academy Awards in a hilarious extended gag scene. This is the funniest NAKED GUN movie, but also the most inappropriate for the targeted teenage audience.

Unfortunately, this movie is filled with sexual references to genitals, sexual self-gratification, and sexually suggestive comments. One extended gag centers on Frank donating at a sperm bank, complete with sound effects and visual aids for stimulation. Others show Frank and a convict in the shower hinting at homosexuality and Frank feeling some cantaloupes at the store which are really a woman's breast. Also one offensive scene has Frank kissing a woman who, by the shadow of a phallic symbol on the wall, we see is a man, a la THE CRYING GAME. Comic violence occurs throughout, including shootings and a prison fight where a bizarre twisting off of a man's head is supposed to be funny. An anti-theft device grabs a man's crotch, and a girl is knocked off a cliff and eaten by sharks, but no blood is shown. Two men are blown up by a bomb at the end of the movie. Surprisingly, there are no obscenities in this PG-13 film but some profanities. The big losers will be the teenage kids who are exposed to NAKED GUN's twisted sexual humor.
