Naked In New York

MPAA Rating: R

Entertainment: +1/2

Content: -4

Jake Bridges (Eric Stoltz), a struggling playwright, reminisces about his life while driving. His favorite memory involves Jo Anne (Mary-Louise Parker), his beautiful live-in photographer. He vividly recalls their sexual encounters, and wistfully laments departing to New York to work on his play. While he is in New York, a photography studio owner recognizes Jo Anne's "talent" in the field and wants her to move away with him. Jake begins an affair with the lovely prima donna, played by Kathleen Turner. Unfortunately, the whole plot of the film is thin, stale and boring with its well-worn stereotype of the flaky Greenwich Village artist.

NAKED IN NEW YORK definitely lives up to its title. Director Martin Scorsese portrays two graphic sex scenes with nudity and no restraint or sensitivity for the viewing audience. Premarital sex is exhibited as normal behavior with no serious repercussions. Also, during a dream sequence, Jake is shown from the front fully nude on a beach. Chris, Jake's new roommate, expresses homosexual affection by kissing the young writer on the lips. Plenty of obscenities and profanity go along with all the sex. This trashy film deserves an NC-17 rating for its atrocious language and steamy sex scenes.
