If you like fairy tale romance and are not familiar with the '50's film, AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER with Cary Grant, then you'll love LOVE AFFAIR. Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, real-life husband and wife, co-star in this remake. Beatty plays Mike Gambril, a television sports broadcaster and notorious womanizer. He meets Terry McKay (Bening) on a flight to Sidney, Australia. When the plane makes a forced landing on a remote island in the South Pacific, the passengers are rescued by a Russian cruise ship. The ship docks for one day on a lush fantasy island and who should live there, way up in the hills, but Mike's beloved 86-year-old Aunt Ginny (Katharine Hepburn). After a visit with her, Terry and Mike fall madly in love, even though both are engaged to others. But as they return to New York, neither can bare to say goodbye. They agree to sort out their lives and to meet exactly three months later on top of the Empire State Building. A tragic event prevents that meeting, but, rest assured, true love wins out. The South Pacific sunsets and lush settings, plus several Ray Charles numbers set the mood for love and romance. Still, Warren Beatty is no Cary Grant, and this LOVE AFFAIR will be forgotten long before the original.

Worldly Mike and Terry both have been living with their fiances before they meet. Mike declares that a "little fooling around" is like an occasional glass of wine: good for you. Once they realize they are in love, however, they break up their previous relationships, and Mike stops flirting with every attractive woman he sees. While sexual intercourse is not shown, it is implied as the aftermath of passionate kissing while Mike and Terry are on the cruise ship. One obscenity spoken by Aunt Ginny is out of character and totally pointless. When Terry refuses to date while waiting for her reunion with Mike, her puzzled girl friend bluntly asks her if she has changed her sexual preference. The real danger of LOVE AFFAIR might be that impressionable teenagers will not recognize that this is just a fairy tale in a 90's setting.
