Timecop

MPAA Rating: R

It's 2004 and an American scientist has discovered the secret of time travel. Ambitious Senator Aaron McComb (Ron Silver) heads the Time Enforcement Commission, chartered to insure that no one goes back in time. New enforcement officer Max Walker (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and his wife Melissa (Mia Sara) are attacked one evening, and Max watches helplessly as his house explodes, killing Melissa. Ten years later, Max learns that power-hungry Senator McComb, now a presidential candidate, is travelling back in time to make changes in the past that will ensure his election. It's up to Max to stop McComb, and in the process have the chance to change history and bring his beloved Melissa back to him. TIMECOP, although at times predictable, is an entertaining, well-made mix of fast-paced action and esoteric science-fiction "what-ifs?" Mr. Van Damme still can't act, but the special effects and other strong performances save the day.

However, this entertainment comes at a high price in terms of objectionable elements. Gratuitous sexual intercourse, full rear male and full frontal female nudity, profanity and obscene language fill the spaces between Van Damme's violent confrontations with the bad guys. Amidst the often brutal and intense martial arts sequences, a man has his arm frozen, then broken off by a roundhouse kick. Several people are shot in the head at close range. Max and Melissa are seen having sex, with rear male nudity and female breast nudity. Later, we see a nude woman beckoning toward the camera. She turns out to be a "virtual woman" in a computer simulation. TIMECOP's intensity can be compared with the TERMINATOR films, containing the same gratuitous offensive elements. TIMECOP is not time well spent.
