Johnny Mnemonic

MPAA Rating: R

Entertainment: +2

Content: -3

Keanu Reeves stars as Johnny Mnemonic, a 21st century courier who, for the right price, transports information in a computer chip in his brain. In this futuristic fantasy, the world is controlled by two or three large corporations. One company, Phamakon, has some top secret information that has been stolen and given to Johnny to deliver to an underground resistance movement called the Lo-Teks. Johnny discovers how important it is only after being chased by hired assassins. A lovely samurai warrior (Dina Meyer) helps download the data Johnny is carrying before it is too late. This fairly exciting plot, however, is marred by bad acting and worse dialogue, making the movie at times more laughable than suspenseful.

Apparently to bolster the bad script, the filmmakers felt the need to make this movie as gory as possible. With the invention of a weapon like a laser string, the bad guys cut off people's hands, heads, and torsos. The female samurai are also very good at throwing five inch nails into people's throats and necks. More than ten people die gruesome deaths like these, with lots of blood shown. Also, one of the hired assassins is a crazed religious fanatic who kills people while calling out the name of Jesus. If this were not enough, the foul language is just as offensive with over 50 obscenities and many profanities and crude terms. There is brief side female nudity in a few scenes, but fortunately no sexual situations. This movie is not one to remember, so forget about seeing JOHNNY MNEMONIC.
