Strange Days

MPAA Rating: R

With a new millennium about to start, these are indeed strange days for Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes). Lenny is an ex-cop who deals in the black market technology of virtual experiences. The police have invented a camcorder for the mind, which takes pictures and sensations using the wearer's own eyes and feelings. The device records exciting experiences which are played back in the operator's own mind. Things are going well for Lenny until he stumbles onto a disk which records a murder that someone is willing to kill again to recover the disk. Lenny, with the help of his friend Macy (Angela Bassett), tries to hunt down the murderer. This sad film about the disintegration of American culture has plot holes as big as the Internet.

The movie illustrates some of the degrading behavior that people might dabble in through new hi-tech mind-pornography. Two lesbians kissing, a man raping a woman, and a man and a woman making love are all shown as sensations captured by this new technology. Breast nudity abounds in both the lesbian scene and several scenes of another woman wearing only the bottom of her bikini. A graphic rape scene and another sex scene feature breast nudity as well. Added to this, several violent fights ensue complete with kicking, punching, and stabbing. A rabid policeman shoots five people in a large crowd. This Rodney King styled message makes all the Los Angeles cops except the commissioner seem suspect. A barrage of atrocious language including over 150 obscenities and many regular profanities assault the ears. There are no redeeming qualities in this vile, degrading movie.
