Nine-year-old twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, well known from the TV sitcom FULL HOUSE, star in this fun, romantic comedy. One is a feisty, streetwise orphan named Amanda Lemmon (Mary Kate) who lives at a New York City orphanage. Working at the orphanage is warm-hearted and beautiful Diane Barrows (Kirstie Alley) who is trying to find a couple to adopt Amanda. The other nine-year-old is Alyssa Callaway (Ashley), daughter of a very rich businessman, Roger Callaway (Steve Guttenberg), whose wife died several years ago. His wife loved kids and established a camp for underprivileged children across the lake from their elegant, spacious mansion. And this is where Amanda goes for camp one summer only to accidentally meet Alyssa and find they look exactly alike. So, just for fun, they change positions and Amanda goes to live in the luxurious mansion while Alyssa joins the kids at camp. Before long, they decide that Roger and Diane are really meant for each other and arrange for them to meet. When they meet, sparks do fly, but this poses a problem since Roger is engaged to marry Clarice (Jane Sibbett), an overbearing, self-centered socialite. Is it possible that Diane and Roger will find a way to develop their relationship and will Amanda find someone to adopt her? IT TAKES TWO is a delightful, fun comedy which is very predictable, but very entertaining. It will probably appeal more to young girls than boys, but all members of the family are likely to get a kick out it.
This family comedy was written and produced by the same creative team that gave us THREE MEN AND A BABY and SISTER ACT 2. In this case, the film turns out to be fairly decent with only a few disappointing elements. One obscenity is spoken by Amanda undoubtedly to avoid a G rating for the film. Also, some hells and damns are included and the term "butt" is used a few times. The exclamation Oh My God is also used a number of times. Although Diane and Roger fall in love, they do not become sexually involved and only near nudity occurs in the form of low cut dresses and when Clarice is seen in her underwear. Roger is a loving father and is torn between his marriage commitment to Clarice and his love for Diane. Diane is also loving and sympathic and thoroughly devoted to the children under her care. Although there are some unfortunate elements in the film, they are not sufficient to keep it from being a reasonably wholesome family movie.
