ONE TRUE THING is the inspirational tale of Ellen Gulden, (Renee Zellweger) an ambitious New York writer, and her emotional journey to understanding her mother (Meryl Streep) and appreciating what her mother's life as a homemaker has been all about. Few moments in life are as powerful or emotionally charged as returning home to visit your parents as an adult. But when Ellen is forced to move back home to help out in the midst of a family crisis, she discovers a new appreciation for her mother's life as a home maker. Ellen learns to appreciate the sacrifices of motherhood as she now finds herself taking care of her terminally ill mother. While Ellen watches her mother's condition deteriorate, she begins to see a different image of her father (William Hurt) and must learn to embrace it.

ONE TRUE THING unearths the deepest of emotions, as the Gulden family tries to deal with loss, reconciliation and redemption. It is truly one of the finest films released this year. The acting by Renee Zellweger and Meryl Streep will probably earn them both Oscar nominations. Few films accurately depict the life of a homemaker and the sacrifices she makes for her family. However, this film does and it does it beautifully. As Ellen gets to know her mother better she begins to see her mother's worth escalate as she is immersed into the world of a homemaker. ONE TRUE THING is rated R for the many adult themes it addresses. Infidelity is painfully present and pre-marital sex is hinted at a couple of times. But most painful is watching someone with a terminal illness and the effect it has on that person's family. When Ellen has to help her mother out of the bathtub, viewers see the havoc her mother's body has suffered from disease. The Guldens find that as illness begins to claim a loved one, the one true thing discovered is that nothing is more important than loved ones. Unfortunately this film does contain objectionable language. The 21 crudities and obscenities and 29 profanities clearly earn this film its negative acceptability.
