Cave, The

MPAA Rating: PG-13

In this horror film set in the mountains of Romania, explorers come upon an abandoned Catholic church and discover a vast cave beneath. The explorers are lost, and the mystery of their disappearance is forgotten until years later. During a scientific study of these mountains led by Dr. Nicholai (Marcel Iures) and his assistant, Katherine (Lena Headey), the cave is rediscovered. The world's finest spelunkers accept the challenge of searching the depths of the cave for its secrets. Jack (Cole Hauser) leads the team (Morris Chestnut, Eddie Cibrian, Rick Ravanello, Piper Perabo, Daniel Dae Kim) who soon discovers that the cave is inhabited by strange creatures. They find the remains of previous explorers, and the bloodthirsty creatures begin their assault on their new prey. The explorers must conqueror the cave's natural obstacles and horrific inhabitants.

The exploration team's curiosity is continuously perked as they find evidence of previous explorers. This feeds their quest for adventure and spurs them on to go farther than their predecessors. The loyalty of each team member is tested, and the commitment to teammates in trouble proves heroic and admirable. Reported in the movie as European legend, this cave is described as a portal to hell. It is interesting that the writers chose to have a "church"? built on top of the entrance of the cave to seal the entrance with the supreme power of God. The violence, other than a few arguments among team members, is mostly between humans and the cave-dwelling creatures associated with demons and the devil. Due to this creature violence and some objectionable language and profanity, Preview cannot give this move a positive acceptability rating.
