Boogeyman

MPAA Rating: PG-13

This horror film tells the story of a young man who has to confront the terror that traumatized him as a child. Following his mothers (Lucy Lawless) death, Tim Jensen (Barry Watson) returns to the home where he saw the Boogeyman snatch his father 15 years earlier. Jensen had been told that nothing happened that night, but the truth plagued him as he grew up. He plans to stay at the eerie home for one night after his mothers funeral before returning to the city. The home is filled with horrific memories of a father who locked him in a closet as a child and told him to count to five when he was scared. His greatest fear as he enters the home is the terror that is waiting in the closet. After seeing the Boogeyman take his uncle and girlfriend (Emily Deschanel), Jensen knows that he has only one choice: He must face the Boogeyman.

The horror of this predictable movie is that it goes on for 86 minutes. Boogeyman, a dark movie with little blood and gore, attempts to scare its audience with eerie music and sudden action that includes a black bird smashing into a windshield and a corpse grabbing a man. In this abandoned house, every door needs WD-40 and every floor board creaks when stepped on. Jensens constant flashbacks to his troubled childhood are disrupting and distracting. The audience is spared a lengthy look at the Boogeyman who prefers to dart across rooms to snatch victims. The violent manner of the snatchings and some partial nudity makes this an inappropriate movie for children. This reviewers favorite line was when Jensen tells a little girl, There is no such thing as the Boogeyman. Oh, if only that were true; I could have avoided an agonizing evening.
