Filmed in France in 1997, LUCIE AUBRAC tells the story of a young couple involved in the Resistance movement against the German occupation of France in World War II. Raymond Aubrac (Daniel Auteuil) is arrested with some other men after the Resistance blows up a German troop train, although the charge is dealing in black-market rations. His wife Lucie (Carole Bouquet), aware of his underground activities, secures his release through the French prosecutors office. But Raymonds captured again when the Gestapo raids a meeting of Resistance leaders. As he suffers in the German-run prison, Lucie works with Resistance members to plan his rescue. Based on true events and people, this intimate tale of one couples devotion and courage will inspire audiences, but foreign films usually draw limited crowds.

Lucies devotion to Raymond leads her to take bold risks as she plans his rescue. At one point, she is shown poisoning some jam to be given to a traitor. Although pregnant, she also participates in the release effort. In fact, pretending shes an unwed mother who wants to marry the father of her child provides the catalyst for the rescue. The disgusting conditions of the prisoners include roach-infested cells and interrogations which include bloody beatings. One prisoner is graphically executed by a firing squad. One scene of Raymond and Lucie in bed includes some frank sexual comments but they are not obscene and only one moderate crudity was noted in the subtitles. Male rear nudity is scene as a police doctor examines a prisoner and again as Raymond takes a shower after his imprisonment. One touching scene has Lucie comfort a crying Raymond when he learns his parents were taken prisoner. This personal view of World War II, while containing some graphic elements, is suitable for adult audiences.
