If Lucy Fell
Entertainment: +2
Acceptability: -2 1/2

IF LUCY FELL is the first movie for Eric Schaeffer who made a brief showing as one of the roommates on the short-lived FOX TV comedy, Too Something. This movie, with roughly the same plot, is like a two-hour version of that half-hour show. Joe (Eric Schaeffer) thinks he's in love with his beautiful next-door neighbor, Jane (Elle MacPherson). But Joe is painfully shy and won't talk to Jane. Joe's platonic roommate, Lucy (Sarah Jessica Parker), is afraid she will never get married and decides to kill herself if she is not in a good relationship in one month. Of course Joe and Lucy really love each other, but their misguided attempts to find the perfect person backfire, sometimes with humorous results. Sarah Jessica Parker, playing the same neurotic romance-seeker as she did in Miami Rhapsody, turns in the best performance in an otherwise flat showing. IF LUCY FELL is funny for about 45 minutes, but tries too hard to be witty and charming. It ends up falling short on both laughs and love.

Both Joe and Lucy believe that the best way to find the right lifemate is to first sleep with them. In the course of the film, they both have affairs. Lucy ends her two-year relationship with a current boyfriend because she realizes she really isn't in love with him. The film also contains a slew of sexual references and some foul language. Although there are no scenes of sexual intercourse, in one steamy scene with Joe, Jane is seen in her bra. On a more positive note, both Joe and Lucy finally decide that they belong together and both reject the temptation of having sex with their current love interest. This search for meaningful relationships gives viewers a very shallow look at love. That, plus many obscenities and profanities, will quickly turn discerning audiences off. Let IF LUCY FELL fall off your must see list.
