Sally Atwater (Michelle Pfeiffer) is a young, ambitious reporter just hired by a Miami TV station. But she knows nothing about TV reporting. The news director, Warren Justice (Robert Redford), is a veteran reporter and former Washington correspondent who takes her under his wing and begins to train her. Before her first newscast, he changes her name to Tally when nervousness makes her stutter her name. In spite of being warned about Warren's past affairs, Tally falls in love with her mentor, who is old enough to be her father. As her reporting skills blossom, Tally accepts an offer from a large Philadelphia station. Unfortunately, her career begins to falter without Warren's guidance, so he follows her to Philadelphia. With his help, Tally covers a prison riot and turns a disaster into a major, exclusive news story which earns her another career boost. When Warren leaves for an assignment in Panama, will Tally be able to maintain her momentum? This love story behind the news cameras works because of the actors, but the story line is a little choppy.

It takes a while for Warren and Tally to fall in love, but after a late night of video editing while drinking beer, it happens. From there, the romance grows to a weekend of sex just before Tally moves away. In all, the two have on-screen sex twice, once on the newsroom floor, briefly interrupted by Tally's boss. After they marry, honeymoon sex is implied again. While no nudity is shown, it is implied in one of their love-making scenes. Although the language contains a number of crudities, it is the 12 obscenities that are the most jarring, especially considering the film's PG-13 rating. To his credit, Warren and his ex-wife, another famous reporter, are on friendly terms, and she even helps Tally. His high sense of integrity in the newsroom, regardless of political correctness, has cost him several jobs. But with the jarring language and apparent endorsement of premarital sex, this film gets too personal for a positive recommendation.
