Forty-year-old science fiction author John Henderson (Albert Brooks) has just gone through another divorce and is very despondent. He decides he would like to get better acquainted with his mother and relive part of his youth, so he moves back into the attractive family home where his widowed mother is living in Sausalito, California. His mother, portrayed by Debbie Reynolds, isn't too happy with this arrangement, but becomes reconciled to the idea. Before long she and John are sharing some happy times and humorous conversations. In fact, much of the appeal of this unique film revolves around their humorous interactions, as well as the comical rivalry which John and his married brother Jeff (Rob Morrow) experience. To his surprise, John discovers that his mother wrote some fictional novels when young, but her career was cut short when she had a family. He's also surprised to find that his mother has an older boyfriend whom she dates occasionally. The comical relationships between the main characters in this film make it a clever, entertaining bit of fluff.

The story takes place in today's California, and John and his mother and brother live rather contemporary lifestyles. At the same time, John and his family are on fairly good terms and share a refreshing family loyalty and love. However, John in particular is very uninhibited and his conversations frequently contain sexually suggestive remarks. He even makes a humorous, satirical remark to a neighbor about incest with his mother. Further, John and his mother visit a Victoria's Secret store which gives rise to some comical suggestive dialogue. His mother is also uninhibited and is having a casual affair with an older attractive man. However, no sex scenes or nudity are included in the film. Their language is unrestrained as well and a number of obscenities and regular profanities are spoken, mostly by John. Overall, this comedy has been modernized to the extent it will be objectionable to discriminating viewers.
