Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves
Entertainment: +3
Acceptability: +2

This new Walt Disney family comedy is the latest in its film series that began with "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." In this case, Disney has bypassed the theaters and gone straight to video. Early on in the story, two sets of parents get shrunk, including daffy scientist Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis) and his wife Diane (Eve Gordon). Wayne's brother, Gordon (Stuart Pankin), and his wife also get accidentally miniaturized by Wayne's shrinking machine contraption. With their parents no longer in sight, Wayne and Gordon's adolescent children throw a big party for their friends at Wayne's house and a great time is had by all. All the while the two tiny parent couples are desperately trying to attract the attention of their children so they can be returned to their normal size. Naive Szalinski and his outlandish inventions are good for some laughs and the escapades of the kids and shrunken parents are fun. Youngsters in particular will get a kick out of this amusing comedy.

In a company presentation, two mild obscenities are spoken inadvertently by Wayne, who apologizes for them. These words undoubtedly were inserted to avoid a G rating. But there's no sexual content or suggestive humor in this family film, although one of the boys at the party forcefully kisses Gordon's teenage daughter. She lets him know this is not the way to show his interest in her. The children talk about doing forbidden things while their parents are gone, and do clutter up the house with their party. Also, two of the young boys look at a suggestive magazine, and although Wayne doesn't approve he doesn't clearly state his objections. However, the parents do have a good relationship with their children and discipline them on occasion. Overall Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves is a fun film with a number of positive messages and only a few minor flaws.
