Ulee's Gold

Ulee Jackson (Peter Fonda) stays busy farming bees in the Florida swamplands and raising his two granddaughters, Penny and Casey. He reluctantly agrees to rescue the estranged wife of his incarcerated son, Jimmy, from two hoodlums holding her hostage for money that Jimmy owes them. But saving Jimmys drug addicted wife, Helen, proves to be a difficult task. Only with the help of neighborly nurse, Connie Hope (Patricia Richardson), is Ulee able to detoxify Helen and focus on returning the cash to the hoodlums while at the same time extracting the famous Tupelo honey from his beehives. ULEE'S GOLD will engage mature viewers who have the patience to endure the slow-moving plot, and will reward them with wonderfully rounded characters. Unfortunately, the film suffers at times from unrealistic dialogue and fails to make full use of its best acting talent, Richardson.

The film supports several major biblical themes. Ulee is an independent man who learns to reach out to Connie for help. Helen is a lowlife who receives forgiveness from her daughters and is restored to her family. And Ulee gives Jimmy a second chance to come back to the farm and take over the beekeeping business. It is a genuine tragedy that ULEE'S GOLD contains so much foul language. The film's warts-and-all approach to character, situation, and dialogue results in many obscenities, crude words, and profanities. The f-word alone is spoken nine time. Like a bear on a beehive, viewers will wonder if the honey is worth the sting
