When an aging, down-and-out private detective named Harry Ross (Paul Newman) retrieves a runaway teenager from the arms of her lover in Mexico, it proves to be a costly experience for him. The girl's seemingly wealthy parents, Jack and Catherine Ames (Gene Hackman and Susan Sarandon) let Harry live in their garage apartment rent free instead of paying him for his work. Two years later, Jack asks Harry to deliver an envelope to a mysterious woman, and Harry figures it must be blackmail money, but for what? The supposedly simple favor for his friend leads Jack down a murky trail of murder and deceit. Then there are the electric vibes bouncing off Harry and Catherine, plus Jack's terminal illness which all complicate Harry's dilemma. Twilight will attract the older adult crowd who appreciate Newman's laid-back charm and the acting talents of the other cast members.

In an attempt to draw in the worldly younger adults, Hollywood elected to throw in nudity and sex. The teenager is shown with her lover frolicking on the beach in passionate embraces and later in a sex scene with breast nudity. Catherine's opening scene shows her swimming nude which reveals full rear and breast nudity. She and Harry have sex once with brief rear nudity. Harry's investigation leads to many shoot-outs with mysterious characters lurking in the shadows, but he suffers many kicks in the ribs, groin and head while others suffer fatal bloody gunshot wounds and severe body blows. The teenager accidentally shoots Harry in the leg when she picks up his gun that has fallen out of its holster. An awful lot of blood flows with each incident. Disgusting, filthy language permeates the dialogue, including 42 obscenities and 14 profanities. Twilight may attract the older crowd, but it will also repulse them with its nudity, gory violence and foul language.
