Urban Legend

Twenty-five years ago, according to the story, a professor went crazy in Stanley Hall at Pendleton University and killed several student before killing himself. Natalie (Alicia Witt) is taking Dr. Wexler's (Robert Englund) course in urban legends with her friends. But someone is turning the legends into reality. Her friend is decapitated by someone in the car's backseat. Her roommate is killed in the night but Natalie didn't know because she didn't turn on the lights. A boy she goes out with is hung in the woods; she hears his feet dancing on the car roof. But who is doing the killing and why? Journalism major Paul (Jared Leto) may help find the answers but he is also a suspect.

The fans of recent teen horror flicks like SCREAM and I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER may enjoy the gory twists and turns but most will find the action predictable. While many of the gorier scenes are off camera, like a girl being hacked with an axe or decapitated, there is still plenty of blood on camera. Usually a bloody body or pool of blood on the floor is shown, but one scene shows a man's ankles cut then he's impaled on spikes at a parking garage. Another scene shows blood dripping inside a microwave, implying a dog was put in there. The owner starts to vomit in the bathroom, seen from inside the toilet, but is stopped with a rope around his throat then he's forced to drink drain cleaner. There's also a closeup of a surgical scalpel cutting into a girl's stomach but it's a minor wound. Along with the gory there's the usual slate of gutter language and sexually explicit comments. Natalie's roommate is shown having sex with the camera angle obscuring nudity except for her side buttocks which obscures her partner's genitals. One girl hosts a talk radio show with explicit sexual questions and is seen showing another girl illustrations from the Kama Sutra. With gory violence, foul language and graphic sexual content, URBAN LEGEND should be passed up.
