Still Breathing
PG-13
Entertainment: +2 1/2
Acceptability: -1/2

Advertised as the best date movie this year, STILL BREATHING is indeed a touching, but very unique, love story. It seems that Fletcher McBracken(Brendan Fraser) as well as other male members of his family have had psychic visions of the woman they should marry, even though they have not yet met her. Fletcher's vision convinces him he should go to Formosa to find his true love, but he ends up at the Formosa Cafe in Hollywood where he meets Rosalyn Willoughby(Joanna Going). He's convinced Rosalyn is the one for him and persuades her to return with him to his home in San Antonio, Texas, for a visit. But Rosalyn hasn't told him of her ulterior motive for becoming his friend and some traumatic times are in store for them. Even though Rosalyn and Fletcher come from radically different backgrounds, they are drawn together in this tender romantic comedy. The psychic element makes the film a little strange, but Fletcher is a sensitive, likable guy and his infatuation with the worldly wise Rosalyn makes for an appealing love story.

In this PG-13 film, offensive elements are amazingly sparse. When Rosalyn and Fletcher first meet, she attempts to seduce him, but he resists being involved sexually early on. However, they are shown in two sensual kissing scenes, one in which she removes her blouse. No sex is shown, but it is subtly implied that eventually they do become sexually involved. Rosalyn is engaged in an art scam operation designed to fleece wealthy men, but really doesn't like her lifestyle. Fletcher is a kindhearted, caring person who performs children's puppet shows for a living. His grandmother (Celeste Holm) is also a caring, perceptive person who is kind to Rosalyn. Foul language is held to a minimum, with only three mild and moderate crudities, a few obscenities including one s-word and one regular profanity. STILL BREATHING is potentially a good date movie, but its overly sensual kissing scenes, implied acceptable premarital sex and some rough language keep us from giving it our wholehearted recommendation.
