Wedding Date, The
Entertainment: +2

In this romantic comedy, New Yorker Kat Ellis (Debra Messing) goes home to London to be in her sisters (Amy Adams) wedding. Kats self-absorbed half sister, Amy, enjoys gloating over the fact that she found a husband before Kat did. What might otherwise be a joyful reunion with the family turns to disaster when Kat discovers that her ex-fianc is going to be the best man. The feelings she still has for him cause her to take extreme measures to maintain her dignity. In order to make her ex jealous, she hires an expensive, handsome, charming escort (Dermot Mulroney) to play the role of her boyfriend. Nick Mercer turns out to be the envy of all the other girls. Kat appears to be a sweet, innocent girl who is trying to salvage whats left of her self-respect. What she does not plan for is falling in love with her hired date.

But it is not long before she finds herself sharing a room with Nick. An innocent girl falling for a gigolo is a moral paradox. The same girl condemning an adulterer is either hypocrisy or selective morality. When Kats date begins to take off his clothes to take a shower, she turns her head away but then, forgetting for a moment that he is naked, turns around and finds herself staring at a naked crotch (just out of camera range). She immediately turns away but then steals one more glance. Its all made to seem perfectly normal that she is out with a man who does sexual favors for money. Kats sister cheats and lies to her, and Kats stepfather passively watches it all. The male prostitute has the most charm and wisdom, making him out to be the good guy. The Wedding Date may be good for a few laughs but is not worth much more than that. Preview does not recommend it due to sexual content, bad language, brief nudity and a warped view of morality.
