Edward Carnby (Christian Slater) along with 19 other young orphans was subjected to evil, cultic experimentation carried out with the aid of a nun at the orphanage. As an adult, he becomes an investigator of supernatural mysteries in this horror film adapted from an Atari video game. When a container made of gold is recovered from the ocean floor, greedy men take over the find and, upon opening the container, unwittingly release a strange evil, re-igniting the atrocities done to the children who are now adults. While investigating the death of a friend on Shadow Island, Carnby searches the remains of an ancient cultic civilization and finds clues that help him unravel a mystery leading back to his horrific childhood. Aided by his assistant and ex-girlfriend Aline Cedrac (Tara Reid), he discovers that an army of evil creatures have passed through an open gate between the light and the dark. With the help of government agents, they unleash a war against the dark forces of evil.

In this strange story about demonlike creatures attacking humans, these creatures can be killed, but it takes a lot of bullets to do it. This requires a great deal of firepower and results in a load of on-screen violence and disturbing images. Whenever the creatures and humans come in contact, it leads to a gruesome, bloody mess. Humans that have been infected by the creatures have superhuman powers and appear to be resilient to bullets. One of the films characters says, There is a price for bringing darkness into the light. Preview says, There is a price for entering the darkness to see this film and strongly warns viewers against it. If the violence, demonic subject matter and psychological horrors are not reasons enough, the frequent use of bad language is.
