Final Cut, The
Entertainment: +3
Acceptability: -1 1/2

In this science-fiction film, a new technology allows the memories and experiences of a persons life to be recorded and later viewed and saved for posterity. The Zo chip is implanted into an infants brain by the parents. When that individual dies, the images and experiences are edited, pieced together and added to the video chronicles of that family. Alan Hakman (Robin Williams) is the best editor in the business. He and other cutters look into a dead persons life and in a priestlike role can absolve his or her sins by hitting the delete key, or they can capture those memories for eternity. A former cutter (James Caviezel) tries to destroy the company that makes Zoe implants. The Final Cut looks at how this technology a toy that gives the social elite a sense of immortality and a gross invader into the private lives of those who want some things to be forgotten can be used for good and for evil.

The Final Cut explores the skeletons in peoples closets, those past sins that produce deep regret and guilt. Due to the depictions of these depraved and wretched events in the memories of Alans clients, Preview cannot recommend this movie. One individual physically and verbally abuses his wife. Another has an implied incestuous experience with his young daughter. Individuals have rememories of having sex. There are private times that no one would want others to know about. The cutter has the opportunity to play God and shape peoples legacies as he determines which memories are kept and which are deleted. Alan defines himself as a sin eater. Some in this film believe that such power belongs to God alone, and others want to use that power for their own personal gain.
