Cookout, The

This comedy is the story of Todd Anderson (Storm P) who was raised in a modest neighborhood by good parents (Frankie Faison and Jennifer Lewis). When Todd is chosen as the No. 1 NBA draft pick by the New Jersey Nets and signs a contract for $30 million, his life takes on a dramatic transformation as he finds out that having money is not as easy as it seems. Suddenly friends, strangers and family are looking to Todd to help them out financially. When Todd buys a new home in a swanky, white neighborhood, he invites friends and family over for a cookout hoping to convince everyone that money has not changed him. But it is not long before everyone realizes that money has changed Todd and not for the better. Its up to Todd to make things right. Also staring Danny Glover, Queen Latifah, Farrah Fawcett and Tim Meadows.

The Cookout uses racial stereotypes and forced, crude humor for laughs, and it shows stiff white people awkwardly trying to get down to hip-hop music. There are a few funny moments, but mostly the humor falls flat. Todd has loving parents who hold him to high moral standards, but the rest of the family does not. When Todds parents unexpectedly meet his new girlfriend, his mother asks, Do you plan on marrying this girl? Not long after acquiring his wealth, Todd realizes that money is not the answer to happiness. Before a meal, they begin to give thanks to God but are interrupted. While The Cookout does contain some positive messages, its frequent use of crude language and offensive humor prevents it from receiving Previews recommendation.
