The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement picks up a few years after the first film left off. This time, the fledgling Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) has just turned 21 and graduated from college. Her intention is to return to Genovia and prepare to take over the responsibility of ruling her country from her grandmother, Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews). But after a short time back in her homeland, Mia hits an unexpected roadblock. An outdated Genovian law prevents her from taking the countrys throne unless she is married. Not only that, but if she doesnt find and marry a suitor in 30 days, a distant heir will steal the throne away from her family. An arranged marriage appears to be the only way to keep the throne, but it forces Mia to choose between her fairy-tale hopes for true love and her responsibility to her family and her country.

Billed as a family film, The Princess Diaries 2 hits that mark by excluding most questionable content. However, the film deals with more mature issues than its predecessor. In addition to confronting the pressures of high-school popularity, Mia toys with love, marriage and national leadership, often handling these responsibilities inappropriately. Thankfully, Queen Clarisse provides Mia with some parental guidance and encourages her to grow up. The only truly disturbing moment in this film is a positive reference to homosexuality. While brief and not significant enough to warrant a negative acceptability rating, the reference reminds us that many filmmakers are targeting our children in subtle ways. In the end, Preview recommends The Princess Diaries 2. Other than the unfortunate inclusion, it is a fun, clean movie.
