Matt Whitlock (Denzel Washington) is the chief of police in a small town in the Florida Keys in this crime thriller. Things are not going well for Matt with his wife (Eva Mendes), who is a homicide detective on the police force. Matt is having an affair with his former high-school sweetheart Ann Harrison (Sanaa Lathan), and he and his wife are separated and on the verge of a divorce. When Matt discovers that his lover is dying of cancer, he borrows $400,000 of confiscated drug money from the evidence room and gives it to Anne for medical treatment, thinking he will have plenty of time to replace it. Anne and her husband become double-homicide victims, and the chief is left looking like the most likely suspect. When Matts friend and coworker (John Billingsley) discovers Matts predicament, he begins to cover for him. Matt must try to unravel the crime and find those connected with it before his involvement is discovered by his own police force.

Out of Time illustrates how small wrongs can lead to serious consequences. The chief was not being faithful to his separated wife, so he would not go to her and tell her the truth. One lie leads to more and more deception. Most of Whitlocks troubles come about through his poor moral choices. His attempt to right his mistakes is not because he has recognized the error of his ways but because he fears being caught. The film contains several scenes of a sexual nature: a couple kissing, groping, moaning and disrobing down to under garments. A short scene shows two burnt, dead bodies, and other violence includes a man shot and killed with a gun and a man falling from a balcony to his death. The sexual content and violence as well as some bad language prevent Preview from recommending this film.
