Molly Gunn (Brittany Murphy) is a happy-go-lucky daughter of a late rock star in this romantic comedy. It is Mollys 22nd birthday, and she is feeling old. A struggling songwriter and singer takes an interest in Molly at her birthday celebration. Through her influence, he ends up striking it big. After Mollys inheritance is stolen by her manager, she has to get a job, something she has never done before. After one failed job, she is hired as a nanny for Ray Schleine (Dakota Fanning), an eight-year-old girl. In this new relationship, the roles are reversed; the adult acts like a child, and the child acts more like an adult. At first the two clash badly, but before long the two realize that they have a lot in common, including each having lost a father. This arrangement becomes more than just a job.

Uptown Girls is inconsistent about what kind of story it tells. It begins as an adult romance, including sexual encounters inappropriate for children, and then moves to a cutesy relationship between a wild adult and an usually mature eight-year-old with perfectionistic tendencies. Sadly it does a poor job of telling both stories. The adults behave immorally on several occasions, and the little girl has a very smart mouth and uses the finger gesture. Thong underwear is given to a doorman for a tip. The story about the little girl has some good moments. It communicates, for instance, the importance of parents taking an active role in their childrens lives rather than pawning them off to strangers to raise them. The good in this film is not enough to compensate for the bad morals, primarily sexuality and bad language. Preview therefore cannot recommend it.
