In-Laws, The
PG-13

In this Warner Brothers Comedy Romance, Angela Harris (Robin Tunney), wants a simple marriage with six people on the beach, but her over-bearing father, Jerry Peyser (Albert Brooks), is going out of his way to make the wedding something to remember. What he finds out when he finally meets the grooms father, Steve Tobias (Michael Douglas), is more than he bargained for. Tobias, who is supposedly a copier salesman, is in fact a CIA-agent, involved in a scheme to sell a renegade nuclear submarine. Straight-laced conservative podiatrist Peyser is dragged kicking and screaming into a wild series of comical and exciting events with his out-going, globetrotting, flamboyant future in-law. Through their adventures, the quiet Peyser overcomes some of his insecurities, and the hard-boiled Tobias discovers his softer side. There are plenty of laughs and a great deal of secret agent action/thrills in this remake of the 1979 movie.

As the CIA plot unfolds there are several scenes involving violence, however, none are of a graphic or bloody nature. Several characters use martial arts moves and there are several hand-to-hand fights. In one scene a plane crash is actually a remote-control plane with no one in it. A torpedo destroys a submarine, yet we see survivors being rescued. The terrorist to whom Tobias is selling the submarine is portrayed as a bi-sexual who develops a crush on Peyser. He makes several suggestive comments and passes at Peyser, who is simply playing along and is certainly uncomfortable as he turns away the advances. Several uses of exclamatory profanity and a few obscenities, along with the mild violence and sexually suggestive dialogue earn The In-Laws a negative acceptability rating.
