My Giant

Comedian Billy Crystal plays Sammy Kamenski, a Jewish talent agent, in this clever and touching comedy-drama. While in Romania visiting a client on a movie set, Sammy has an auto accident, but is rescued by a caretaker in a nearby monastery. He's astounded to find that the sensitive caretaker, called Max (Gheorghe Mursean), is almost 8 feet tall. Sammy decides Max would make a sensational movie star and persuades him to return to the United States. Max agrees because he is in love with a childhood sweetheart who now lives in New Mexico. Sammy's frantic efforts to get Max into movies are hilarious and eventually it looks like he will succeed. But a serious health problem makes it appear that Max will never get to be a movie star. It even appears he will never get to see his childhood sweetheart. MY GIANT is not only a very funny movie, but has some very poignant moments as well.

This comedy has a very commendable theme, namely, the sacrificial way in which Sammy deals with Max's health problem, just at a time when Max has the opportunity to be a big movie star. Also, Sammy's wife (Kathleen Quinlan) is unhappy with Sammy's role as a husband and father to their young son, but Sammy tries his best to do better. The humor contains some mild religious satire, but also some reverence as Max prays for God's forgiveness in a church. Except for one comical remark, the film is virtually devoid of sex and suggestive or crude humor. But the dialogue in this PG film contains several obscenities, including six s-words, some of which are spoken by Sammy's young son. In an opening scene, a Jewish rabbi uses the term"Jesus Christ" as a swear word and other profanities are spoken as well. MY GIANT has a positive, poignant theme, but again Hollywood has polluted a promising film with offensive language.
