Maid in Manhattan
PG-13
Entertainment: +2
Acceptability: -1

In this romantic comedy, Marisa Ventura (Jennifer Lopez) is a lovely, hard-working maid at a first-class luxury hotel in downtown Manhattan. As a single mom, Marisa?s top priority is her 10-year-old son Ty (Tyler Posey), and she is determined to make life better for him and for herself. Handsome politician Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes) assumes she is a wealthy socialite when he sees her trying on one of the hotel guest?s outfits. He puts his political career on the line and pursues her. The two fall in love after a brief encounter and, like Cinderella, Marisa runs out on him after an elegant ball. The paparazzi makes their relationship front-page news, and all of the tabloid publicity about Christopher?s mysterious companion puts Marisa?s pending promotion in jeopardy. The tension builds around her mistaken identity. Will Christopher still want her when he discovers the truth ? that she is a lowly hotel maid?

Although Maid in Manhattan is a bit shallow and predictable, it does make some positive statements. She encourages Ty, who is bright but shy, when he bumbles his speech, and she juggles her work schedule to ensure that Ty will either be with her or his grandmother. The boy?s hope for a male role model and Marisa?s dream of true love seem shattered, but her wise supervisor reminds her, ?What defines us is how well we rise after falling.? These positives are matched by some negatives. The hotel staff make suggestive remarks about the habits of hotel guests, and a rear, nude view of a man locked out of his room provides some giggles from the housekeeping staff. Marisa spends a night with Christopher in his hotel room, and she is shown leaving his bed early the next morning. Also disappointing is the regular use of profanity. The neutral treatment of premarital sex and the unnecessary foul language give Maid in Manhattan a negative rating from Preview.
