Waking Up In Reno
Arkansas couple Roy and Candy Kirkendall (Patrick Swayze, Charlize Theron) are looking forward to their vacation to Reno, Nevada with their best friends Lonnie Earl and Darlene Dodd (Billy Bob Thornton, Natasha Richardson). Lonnie Earl takes a special edition SUV from his car dealership for the trip. While the main attraction is a ‘monster truck’ rally, Darlene hopes to see a show with her idol, Tony Orlando, and Candy wants to renew her wedding vows in a Reno chapel. Roy and Candy are also trying to start a family. But once in their luxury suite at the hotel, Candy gets positive results from a pregnancy test. However, Roy gets a negative result from his doctor’s fertility test. It’s soon discovered that more’s been shared than friendship. And everybody wakes up to their real feelings about each other. This comedy about relationships, friendships and love make attract a few fans of the cast, but the country rednecks in the big city routine won’t wake up the audience.
The message that true love can survive and forgive, along with true friendships gives a nice moral to this otherwise immoral tale. Candy commits adultery and wants the Reno wedding renewal to wipe out past mistakes, giving a fresh start to her relationship with Roy. However, Roy is clueless to his wife’s affair. Lonnie Earl and Darlene have communication problems as each thinks only of themselves. Several scenes feature implied sexual encounters although no nudity is shown. Lonnie’s lack of morals is shown best when his solution is to have Roy sleep with Darlene. But he also questions if prostitutes in Nevada are free and told they’re legal, not free. Along with the frequent sexual material, the dialogue is thick with crude, obscene and profane comments. WAKING UP IN RENO is not the place to be.
