Domestic Disturbance

Acceptability: -2

Divorce is always difficult on families, particularly children, as they try to figure out how to interact with each others new relationship. In the case of Frank Morrison (John Travolta), he decides to play nice with his ex-wife and work extra hard to keep up a solid relationship with his twelve-year old son Danny (Matthew OLeary). However, in recent months, Danny has begun to act out his inner emotional struggles, particularly at key moments in the breakup of his parents like the day the divorce is final and the day he finds out his mom Susan (Terri Polo) is getting remarried. The new man in her life is Rick Barnes (Vince Vaughn), who local people know little about, but appears very successful and looks to be a fine prospect for a husband. However, after the wedding, Danny witnesses Ricks involvement in a gruesome crime. Because of Dannys past actions, no one will believe him except his dad, who must try to prove Dannys claims. DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE has some big name stars and what purports to be a thrilling and suspenseful premise. While there are a few creepy moments, the story is pretty straightforward without offering anything new. The stars drawing power should create an initial flash, but interest should quickly fade.

In spite of their divorce, which appears to result from selfishness and unwillingness to work things out, the Morrisons generally get along. Danny is particularly fond of his father, and their solid relationship is a positive factor. However, the PG-13 rating results from a fair share of foul language, with two f-words, six s-words, and fifteen strong profanities. A badly edited overdub changes one other f-word into the word ‘fooling’, most likely to earn a lower rating from the MPAA. Despite the title, violent content is generally light until the climactic scene, which portrays an endless spate of violent fighting. While nothing severely graphic occurs, violent acts include a man hit with a shovel and another suffering electrocution. The strong language makes DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE even more disturbing.
