In this update of 1978s HEAVEN CAN WAIT, Chris Rock stars as Lance Barton, a struggling comedian trying to get a performing slot at the closing ceremonies of the famed Apollo Theater. When Barton is about to be hit by a truck, hes transported to heaven a split second too early and discovers he would have survived. Because of this mistake, Barton accepts the head angels offer of a new body, since his was cremated. But the replacement body belonged to an old and rich white man. This forces Lance to try and get laughs at the black performers club in his new white body, a difficult prospect. In addition, Lance meets attractive Sontee (Regina King), but has an equally tough time getting her to go out with an old, white man. Chris Rock has had plenty of success as a stand-up comedian, but finds himself in a role that under utilizes his talents. While there are a few funny moments, most audiences have already seen them in the advertising previews. Despite Rock's popularity, DOWN TO EARTH may light up the box office initially, but it should fade just as quickly.

Heaven is pictured as a classy jazz club from the 1940s or 50s. The angels are attendants and recognize that everything happens as part of a larger plan mapped out by God. However, Lance is placed into the body of another man who recently died, which could be considered a form of reincarnation. Of course, this is played more for comedic value and doesnt appear to be a serious belief. The movie earns its PG-13 rating, and more, from sexual content and foul language. Plenty of sexual innuendo and activity occur, much of it from interaction between Lance (in his old, white body), the old mans adulterous wife (Jennifer Coolidge) and his scheming assistant (Greg Germann). In addition, 16 obscenities and 35 moderate crudities muddy the dialogue, making DOWN TO EARTH much less than angelic.
