Some children get emotionally scarred when ridiculed by their peers, which leads to violent revenge in later years. Thats the premise behind this latest entry in the psycho-slasher-in-a-mask films. Four female friends from grade school gather at the funeral of a murdered friend. The investigation reminds the four of a sixth grade Valentines dance where a nerdish outcast asked them all for a dance, before being accused of sexually attacking overweight Dorothy. Thirteen years later, Dorothy (Jessica Capshaw) throws a Valentines party, but theres more red on the floor than just the decorations. Has the nerd come back for his revenge? Unfortunately, like past killer franchises, the story leaves room for multiple sequels. Despite recent spoofs of the genre, horror films remain surprisingly popular, and this one is probably no exception.
Like most horror/gorefests, this one features plenty of blood as characters suffer various gruesome deaths. Although knives seem to be a favorite weapon, more creative killings involve arrows, electric drills and a clothes iron. One particularly gruesome event involves impaling on a large glass shard. Other typical scenes involve discussions of sexual activity, implied promiscuity, premarital sex and an art display of sexually suggestive photos. Obscenities and numerous profanities liberally supplement the sexual innuendoes in the dialogue. Despite a couple of shower scenes, no blood goes down the drain. But this VALENTINE is no holiday.
