Cop and a Half
PG
Entertainment: +2
Acceptability: -1/2

Devon Butler (Norman Golden II) always wanted to be a cop and now he has his chance. The only problem is that Devon is eight years old. When he overhears the details for an important illegal drug sale, he uses the information as bargaining power to become a cop for a day. He is teamed with a veteran cop with a perennially bad attitude, Nick McKenna (Burt Reynolds), to form the most unlikely cop team in film history. The two start out as "enemies" but Devon's cute ways and his need for a father figure gradually win Nick over. In the same way, Devon learns that being a cop is not fun and games and needs to be left up to the adults. The bad guy is mean but hip Vinnie Fountain (Ray Sharkey) who wants to be a lounge singer a la Frank Sinatra. Needless to say, COP AND A HALF is aimed towards children. They may be the only ones who will enjoy this predictable and uneven movie.

There are three fairly violent scenes of Nick fighting with various people. The first has Nick in his car chasing a thug who is on foot - Nick hates to run. He knocks down fences, runs over gardens and finally beats up the guy and breaks his nose. In the second scene, Nick gets in a fight at a biker bar and hits one person in the genitals and hits another with a pool cue. The third scene has Nick battling it out with the bad guys, and two get shot while Nick gets shot in the shoulder. Also, a surprising amount of foul language is involved for a PG movie, most of it from the boy. A rear view of Nick and Devon urinating is also included. Like the movie KINDERGARTEN COP, COP AND A HALF is an unsettling mixture of police violence and children's themes which do not seem to mesh. For the violence which is excessive for a children's movie and some foul language, COP AND A HALF doesn't make it into our acceptability category.
