Mirror, mirror on the wall, what's the best film this summer for small children? You guessed it. This 1937 Disney classic is truly timeless. Unless you have recently returned from a lifetime on Mars, you know the story. Snow White's evil stepmother, the Queen, is jealous of Snow White's beauty. She charges her henchman with killing Snow White as she gathers flowers in the forest. The henchman can't bring himself to do it, and Snow White escapes, only to come upon the home of the Seven Dwarfs. Happy, Grumpy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, Doc, and Dopey are miners by trade, and don't do too well when it comes to housekeeping. Snow White cleans up their house. The Dwarfs are a little leery at first at the idea of having a woman around the house, but they soon accept her. Her first attempt foiled, the evil Queen decides to take matters into her own hands. She makes a potion that transforms her into an ugly hag, and takes Snow White a poison apple. Snow White bites the apple, and falls into a death-like sleep. Only the kiss of Snow White's true love, the handsome Prince, can bring her back. Hopefully, someday her prince will come. SNOW WHITE's animation, revolutionary in 1937, is still excellent today, and runs rings around the disappointing, recent HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

In terms of acceptability, only two elements of the film require mention. The evil queen summons "dark forces," using sorcery to change her appearance and poison an apple. However, the forces of evil are soundly defeated and not glorified. In addition, the Queen's transformation into the ugly hag is pretty intense, so caution should be taken with very young children. Overall, though, seeing SNOW WHITE on the big screen before it goes to video could very well be the top movie treat of the summer.
