Son In Law, The
PG-13
Entertainment: +2
Acceptability: -2 1/2

This outrageous spoof on family traditions implies what teenagers have always suspected - Mom and Dad are so square. The hero (Pauly Shore), nicknamed "Crawl" because that's the way he always goes home, is a student at UCLA. He befriends freshman Rebecca Warner (Carla Gugino), fresh off a South Dakota farm. Her protective parents have brought her to the university, and reluctantly leave her to cope with a severe case of culture shock. Under Crawl's wing, however, Rebecca is soon transformed into one of the crowd, complete with tattoo, fishnet blouses and short skirts. When Rebecca brings Crawl home for Thanksgiving, it's his turn for culture shock. Dressing and acting like a comic valentine, Crawl blended in with the UCLA crowd. On the farm, however, he is totally out of place. Crawl's sensitivity begins to peek through his outlandish behavior. In one short week he turns drab Mrs. Warner (Cindy Pickett) into an alluring woman, becomes a confidant to obnoxious little brother Zack (Patrick Renna), and even wins over Dad (Lane Smith) and Granddad (Mason Adams). SON-IN-LAW will offend some while its targeted audience "teens" will laugh uproariously.

Scenes designed to shock include Rebecca's lesbian roommate kissing her partner in front of Rebecca's family, and male dorm residents walking in the hall nude. Incessant crude expressions refer to every bodily function. Adolescent Zack is obsessed with sexual curiosity and makes crude remarks about women's anatomy and pilfers Rebecca's roommate's lingerie. A disgusting scene of almost nude women mud-wrestling goes on far too long. Nineteen obscenities are spewed out throughout, some by young Zack. Crawl even walks in on Mrs. Warner as she is finishing her bath and proceeds to make suggestive remarks to her. She is flattered! Violence is limited to mud-wrestling, one fist fight, and some property damage to farm equipment. Surprisingly, Rebecca refuses to have sex with her high school boyfriend before leaving for college. The abundance of tasteless scenes make SON-IN-LAW very unappetizing.
