Another Stakeout
PG-13
Entertainment: +3
Acceptability: -2

If you saw STAKEOUT about six years ago, you may remember the quarreling, funny undercover cops, Chris Lecce (Richard Dreyfuss) and Bill Reimer (Emilio Estevez). In this sequel, we find them still working together, clowning around and always in hot water. However, a new element is forced upon them as their boss orders them to spy on a well-to-do couple in an exclusive neighborhood near Seattle. Gina Garrett (Rosie O'Donnell), an assistant district attorney, and her big dog Archie join Chris and Bill as they pose as mother, father and son. Bill and Chris resent her presence and the three of them bicker constantly. Some hilarious incidents take place as their stakeout backfires when Gina invites the spied-upon couple to dinner. Clutzy, zany Gina almost steals the show from the two veteran cops. A lot of action, clever dialogue and hearty laughs make ANOTHER STAKEOUT a fun film.

Unfortunately, action seems to mean excessive violence. Early on, a huge explosion blows up a house that kills several people, including a man burned to death. Several shootings, a pistol whipping, falls from heights, bound man pushed down stairs, woman beaten off screen, and a drowning are not all gratuitous but could have been toned down. Chris' girl friend socks him hard in the stomach once, which is gratuitous and cruel. Another negative element is the offensive language, which includes many obscenities, crude expressions and profanities. Although ANOTHER STAKEOUT contains no nudity or sexual intercourse, there are some sexually suggestive remarks made. While Chris has a live-in girl friend who is pressuring him to marry her, Bill is a happily married man who encourages Chris to commit to the woman he loves. ANOTHER STAKEOUT is long on comedy, but short on acceptability because of its offensive language and excessive violence.
