This confusing, plotless movie concerns the antics of twin brothers, separated at birth and both living in New York. Henry Petosa (Matthew Modine) is the meek brother who works at his adopted father's garage. His ruthless, aggressive twin brother, Freddy Ace, works for a mobster. The two have never met and don't know of the other's existence. Henry likes Beverly (Lara Flynn Boyle), a disturbed woman with schizophrenic tendencies. Freddy's wife, Sharon (Lori Singer), a glamorous "roaring 20's" type girl, is madly in love with her gangster husband. Events draw to the inevitable meeting of the brothers. Equinox, the time when light and dark are equal, is meant to metaphorically represent the twins. It may be a wonderful astronomical observation, but this is a mediocre "art" film that will appeal to a limited audience.

This tired story of good and evil presents a group of weird characters who never resolve anything. If there are any messages, they are buried so deep as to be completely obscured. The R rating comes primarily from the violence and nudity in the film, both of which are extraneous to the plot. Altogether, three people die in bloody gunshot scenes. On the T.V. a soft-porn show has four or five women walking around topless. One of the mobster's girlfriends also walks around topless. Three scenes imply intercourse, though nudity is not shown. Many profanities and obscenities, nudity, violence and the sexual situations all gang up on EQUINOX to make it a phenomenon to avoid.
