Wealthy Nick Cavanaugh (Julian Sands) is a gifted plastic surgeon, but emotionally unstable. He is infatuated with Helena (Sherilyn Fenn), who, after a disastrous first sexual encounter, wants nothing to do with him. Helena is badly injured by a hit-and-run truck accident outside Nick's home. Nick amputates her legs, and nurses her back to health. He soon realizes that he must take further steps to prevent her from escaping, so he amputates her arms. She then looks like the classic Venus De Milo statue. By the way, she's never "in a box." She sits on a chair that resembles a throne, where Nick can take care of her and try to win her love. BOXING HELENA doesn't deserve the controversy surrounding it; neither does it deserve the public's attention. It's another in a long line of films with inane dialogue that barely connects sexual encounters; just another soft-core porno flick.

Pornography includes sexual intercourse shown and implied many times, with accompanying male and female full rear and female breast nudity. Deviant sex is also implied. Language features many obscenities and several regular profanities. Incest between Nick and his mother is implied. Cocaine use, social drinking and chasing prescription drugs with alcohol are depicted. Thankfully, we are spared any scenes showing Nick's surgical prowess. Violence is limited to mildly bloody fisticuffs and Nick threatening to kill himself and Helena as well. Helena wears a cross necklace which is prominently displayed even during her sexual encounters. Although not as disgusting as the imagination might paint it, BOXING HELENA is a really poor film with a sick theme.
