He has tickets to every major event in New York; he knows where to get the best deal on jewelry; and he can get you a reservation at the best restaurant in town. "He" is Doug Ireland (Michael J. Fox), concierge at the plush Bradbury Hotel in New York City. Doug's job is to do whatever it takes to make the hotel guests happy. One hundred dollar tips are average for this very ambitious young man. He lives very frugally, saving to build his own luxurious hotel on land in which he has already invested $40,000. When a wealthy, influential businessman, Christian Hanover (Anthony Higgins) offers to invest in Doug's project, Doug is elated. In return, Christian, a married man, asks Doug to entertain his girlfriend, Andy (Gabrielle Anwar). Men and their mistresses are not new to Doug " they often rendezvous at the hotel and he even allows them to borrow a room for a few hours. Christian, however, becomes more and more demanding of Doug, and Doug realizes that he is using Andy. He and Andy start to fall in love, upsetting Doug's carefully planned future. Michael J. Fox's boyish charm dominates this funny, light movie that will have wide audience appeal.

Ironically, the villain is named "Christian." Is this a subtle slur or coincidence? Doug starts out with a single purpose - to make money to build his hotel. He has no social life, no friends and a tiny, inexpensive apartment. Still, we see he has a big heart as he takes up for a co-worker who is about to be fired and patches up a marriage on the brink of collapse. As he begins to fall in love, Doug realizes he must choose between his business deal with an unscrupulous partner and Andy. Andy's adulterous relationship with Christian brings her nothing but unhappiness. She changes from a pouting, disappointed girl into a caring young woman. There is no sex, nudity or violence in FOR LOVE OR MONEY, but Andy does wear very tight, clinging clothes. It is particularly disappointing and unusual for a PG movie to have as many obscenities and profanities as this one. No doubt families expecting light entertainment will be offended by the language.
