DEEP RISING is another tired, overdone horror-action film that offers nothing original. A team of three smugglers in a small run-down boat have been hired by a terrorist group. Somewhere in the middle of the South China Sea, the small boat stalls not far from a huge luxury liner. The crew, led by Finnegan (Treat Williams), and the terrorists climb aboard, looking for help, but find the ship ravaged and only a beautiful jewel thief (Famke Janssen), the ship's owner (Anthony Heald) and the captain alive. As they begin searching the huge ship, they are attacked by huge, octopus-like sea monsters. One by one, all but three are devoured. The almost non-existent plot is buried by continuous gun battles as the terrorists try to destroy everyone and everything in their way. The corny attempts at humor and ridiculous stunts make this cheap imitation of JAWS and TITANIC a nightmare to watch.

The gore and blood never stops. Brutal beatings, monsters devouring humans, then spitting out their skeletons, plus a room full of body parts add up to a disgusting use of violence to entertain. A small hatchet is buried into a man's forehead, a corpse is seen closeup floating in the water, and a screaming woman is sucked into a toilet, presumably swallowed by the monster. Adding to the disaster is the film's dialogue that includes 24 s- words, 6 f-words, 7 profanities and almost 50 crude expressions. The characters are all crooks, but Finnegan displays bravery as he battles the monsters and saves the jewel thief's life. He probably wouldn't have bothered if she had not been wearing a low cut red dress, however. There is no sex or nudity, but two women on the luxury liner are shown kissing on the mouth in a very brief scene. It is appalling to think that a Disney company would insult the public by promoting such a disgusting, gory film.
