Death Wish V: Face of Death
Entertainment: +1 1/2
Acceptability: -3 1/2

Fashion diva Olivia Regent (Lesley-Anne Downe) has set up a clothing factory and modeling show operation in New York's garment district. Unfortunately, her business is underwritten by a mob for money-laundering purposes. Olivia's boyfriend, Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) vows to get her out of her involvement with the mob. Headed by her ex-husband, Tommy O'Shea (Michael Parks), the mobsters relentlessly track her down, ruthlessly murdering anyone who stands in the way. Kersey concocts intricate plots, trying to kill off O'Shea's gang before it's too late. This tasteless, ruthlessly violent film is one to avoid.

The gratuitous violence in DEATH WISH V is atrocious. There are many gruesome on-screen murders, and the camera seems to close in and dwell on the worst of it. These include prolonged close-ups of a man on a conveyor being pulverized in a piece of equipment, people's flesh being eaten away after falling into a vat of acid, and body parts being sawed off or flattened under a hot pressing iron. Added to this is a full palate of shootings, beatings, stabbings, bloody corpses, and even the sight of a woman's face being repeatedly bashed into a broken mirror. The tough-talking mobsters spout off obscenities and crudities as they perform atrocities. While there is no sexual intercourse, full breast nudity occurs three times in sexually suggestive scenes. DEATH WISH V is a perfect example of the film industry's irresponsible exploitation of violence. Write Trimark and protest to the manager of your neighborhood theatre where this film is showing.
