Sophisticated Doc and Carol McCoy (Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger) are expert thieves. He has the tools to break into the most complicated vault and she has the looks to distract the most dedicated security guard. When their partner, Rudy (Michael Madsen), betrays Doc after they finish a job in Mexico, Doc is thrown into a Mexican jail. He spends a year there until ruthless Jack Banyon (James Woods) agrees to arrange Doc's release. However, the stakes are high. While Doc is in prison, Carol becomes Jack's mistress and Doc must perform a million dollar robbery for Jack upon his release. Rudy has been hired to help him, much to Doc's dismay. Carol and Doc look forward to escaping to Mexico to live a normal life once this last job is completed. More betrayals and non-stop action keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

This remake of a Steve McQueen-Ali MacGraw film of the 70's reflects Hollywood's preoccupation with graphic sex and gory violence in the 90's. Besides two graphic sex scenes between Doc and Carol, a perverted relationship between Rudy and a veterinarian's wife muddies the film. He has taken the couple hostage, and she immediately becomes his willing sex partner. While her husband is tied up, she and Rudy have sex in front of him, leading to his suicide. Full breast nudity and sillohuetted nudity occur in the sex scenes. Many obscenities and profanities add to the offensive content. Continuous violence includes point-blank shootings at least eight times, a beating with a pipe and vicious fighting with bloody aftermath. In his favor, Doc only kills in self-defense. After the big robbery, through police chases, garbage dumps, car wrecks, gun battles, explosions, Carol and Doc hang on to the satchel with the money. THE GETAWAY glamorizes violence, with these likable crooks eventually escaping with one million dollars of stolen money. What a message it will send to youth already attracted to violence and crime.
