If you're in the mood for a wacky comedy, IN THE ARMY NOW just might fill the bill. The story of a naive, comical guy joining the Army and being the perfect misfit is an old one indeed, but seems to work all over again in this modern day version. Bones Conway (Pauly Shore) is the misfit who joins up along with his buddy Jack Kaufman (Andy Dick). Actually they just join the Army Reserves to make some money to open up a stereo store. After going through the usual comical mishaps of inept recruits, they graduate. To their great dismay, they are immediately called to active duty to fight a war in North Africa similar to Desert Storm. Being part of a water purification team, they never expect to see combat, but, you guessed it, they accidentally end up right in the thick of things trying to destroy a scud missile in the desert. Their team includes a young black man (David Grier) and a gung-ho young woman, Christine (Lori Petty). There are plenty of laughs in this comedy even though it's just pure slapstick.

Though not the Army type, Bones turns out to be a good soldier. When a crisis develops on the battlefield, he leads his team bravely, though comically, in some heroic deeds. The battlefield scenes contain some shooting battles and fiery explosions, but they're mostly just part of the comedy. Along with the fun, though, comes some foul language and sexually suggestive elements so common these days, even in PG films. Bones likes girls and one comical scene shows him and one of his girlfriends preparing for sex. Later on, he and Christine engage in some humorous, but sexually suggestive conversations. Being an Army movie, you can expect some crude language, and this one has some moderate crudities, several obscenities and one regular profanity. If only the occasional foul language and sexually suggestive content had not been included, In the Army Now would have been a good way to relax and have some fun.
