When a patient commits suicide in front of him, Dr. Bill Capa (Bruce Willis) abandons his successful practice in New York and flies to L.A. to visit a colleague. When his friend is brutally murdered, Capa inherits his psychotherapy group. While investigating the background of the therapy patients, Capa meets Rose (Jane March), a beautiful mystery woman. The search turns deadly when the killer begins to stalk Dr. Capa. Although the plot is somewhat predictable, the twists and turns provide passable fare for TV mystery fans.

Originally rated NC-17 for sexual content and full frontal nudity, it still contains an extended sexual encounter between Capa and Rose, including rear and breast nudity. Much of the offensive language comes from Dr. Capa and Lt. Martinez, uncharacteristic of the mental health or law enforcement profession. The violence gets unnecessarily graphic several times. In the opening scenes, a woman puts a gun in her mouth. Later, she jumps through a high-rise office window. Her fall is filmed showing the body from underneath as the blood spreads after impact. Capa's schoolmate is stabbed multiple times during a struggle and ends up impaled on broken window glass. A car chase endangers other freeway drivers as Capa is pursued by the killer. Eventually Capa admits that he's lost faith in the scriptures, alluding to the writings of psychology pioneers. Instead of scripture, the script uses obscene language, nudity and sexual content to portray its warped vision of the world. THE COLOR OF NIGHT is truly a dark film.
