In a small town in central Texas in 1966, Reece McHenry (Sam Shepard) operates a used clothing store and Carol Fitzsimmons (Diane Keaton), a seamstress, works with him. Reece's wife is seriously ill and Reece and Carol become attracted to each other, embarking on a relationship which extends over 30 years. At the same time, Henry's grown son, Tom(Robert Patrick) falls in love with Carol's grown daughter, Katherine(Diane Lane), but she leaves town to pursue an acting career. When Carol moves to Toronto to care for her sick sister, Reece objects but does not propose marriage. Several years later, Carol and Katherine return to the small town where Reece and Tom still live and find that neither of the men have married. They resume their friendships but the question still remains whether Reece will ask Carol to marry him and whether Tom and Katherine will develop a romantic relationship. This story is rather unique, but never really develops much emotional impact and seems unlikely to do well at the box office.

Although Reece and Carol are gentle, caring small town people, the story and dialogue imply they have an ongoing affair. Tom and Katherine have a brief sexual relationship and are shown in bed once, but with no nudity. Reece also has a brief affair with a friend's wife, but he knows this is wrong and feels guilty. Tom has a lawyer friend, Eddie(Tate Donovan), who is a womanizer, and in some scenes they discuss women's anatomy in a crude , explicit manner. Also, Tom and Eddie, speak a number of obscenities and profanities and even Reece spews out some foul language in a tense situation. And the dialogue has a number of sexually explicit remarks throughout. Even so, only Eddie turns out to be a strongly degenerate character. Considering the frequent foul language, explicit sexual dialogue, and the implication that the affair between Reece and Carol is acceptable, this potentially decent film is a real disappointment.
