Exit to Eden

Photographer Elliot Slater (Paul Mecurio) spends a week at "Pleasure Island," a resort for sado-masochists. While there, he is hunted by two international diamond smugglers hoping to retrieve some pictures that Paul unknowingly took of them. Two straight-laced Los Angeles police detectives go undercover on the island to get both the pictures and the criminals. Sheila (Rosie O'Donnell) poses as one of the well-heeled guests who may choose partner(s) from the available men or women on the island. Her associate, Fred (Dan Akroyd), pretends to be a maintenance man with free access to island activities. The plot, if there is one, quickly degenerates into an excuse to see how many scantily clad men and naked women can be filmed in a two-hour period. The film's shockingly excessive sexual content might be expected at an adult film store, but not at a respectable theater.

No words are strong enough to describe how closely EXIT TO EDEN resembles pornography. One of the Canadian provinces even tried recently to have the film banned. Frequent nudity includes full rear male nudity and full frontal and rear female nudity. People expressing their most perverse sexual fantasies is portrayed as healthy. Voyeurism, sadism, multiple partners, and other distortions of sex abound. Old women go to the island to learn how to "talk dirty." No homosexual conduct is shown, but may be implied in this moral-less situation. Intercourse occurs twice, and is implied many times, usually among complete strangers. Laughably, in the interest of 'safe-sex,' everyone must take a blood test and have a physical exam before they are allowed on the island. When "true love" blossoms between the Dominatrix Lisa (Dana Delany) and Elliot, they decide to marry and continue their lifestyle of bondage and sado-masochism. Fred's marriage supposedly "becomes stronger" after his visit to the island, and Sheila finds a nice man who is into masochism. Some profanity further pollutes the film. Please write a letter of protest about this blatant assault on the public's sensitivity.
