Tommy Boy
PG-13
Entertainment: +2 1/2
Acceptability: -2 1/2

Tommy Boy mimics the old Jerry Lewis/Dean Martin funny boy movies of the 50's. It's that silly, slap stick comedy that builds on a situation and culminates in one big disaster. Chris Farley is Tommy Boy, the irresponsible, slightly slow and always ridiculously funny man. David Spade is Richard, the sarcastic, quick-witted and dry-humored straight man. The movie starts with Tommy graduating from college after seven years. Lacking the skill and knowledge necessary to run his father's company, Tommy is put under Richard's tutoring. When Tommy's father (Brian Dennehy) dies, Tommy and Richard are forced to work together to prevent a hostile takeover by Zalinsky (Dan Akroyd). In an effort to get the company back into the black, the two set out on the road to sell brake pads. It is one hysterical, outrageous situation after another as they bumble through sales calls and life on the road. TOMMY BOY is a no-brainer to watch, but it is definitely good for a laugh or two.

However, unlike Jerry Lewis movies, Spade and Farley interject blatant sexual dialogue and nudity into their act. Bo Derek makes her appearance in her infamous ‘10’ bikini. It's a shame, because it truly ruins a very funny movie. Richard watches a girl strip from her bikini to swim nude in a hotel pool and then decides to gratify himself. When Tommy walks in on him, the sex jokes fly. In addition to this extremely distasteful scene, there is the constant pawing that goes on between Paul (Rob Lowe) and Beverly (Bo Derek). Family values are definitely violated as these two are supposed to be mother and son, but instead turn out to be lovers. The continuous gratuitous obscenities and profanities make this movie more suited for an R rating instead of PG-13. It's better to rent a good old Bud Abbott and Lou Costello or Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin movie. You'll get just as many laughs and none of the trash.
